Phil Johnston

President/CEO

1. Mark Curran is NOT the CEO of any Goodwill organization and he NEVER was.

Phil Johnston is the President/CEO of Goodwill Industries: Serving Northeast Ohio & Northwest Pennsylvania. As a lifelong resident of Ashtabula, OH, a 1982 graduate of Edgewood High School, and owner of P&J North Coast Vending, Johnston has had a long history in the community. Phil is fairly compensated for an individual who has a great deal of experience and the responsibility of over-seeing more than 160 employees among two states. Phil reports to a volunteer board of trustees who determine his wage and hold him accountable for leading the organization and ensuring that Goodwill Industries is on track for success.

2. Goodwill is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission services are funded by our stores.

Many people are misled in their believe that Goodwill is a "for profit" organization whose stores exist only to sell used items for low prices to people who are on limited incomes. While we are happy we can provide affordable goods, Goodwill is more than just a store. Our stores exist to support our mission to help people improve their quality of life through work and related services. When you buy goods in our stores, you are funding programs and services that teach job and life skills to people with disabilities and other barriers to employment. While other great donated goods retail non-profits offer a handout, Goodwill is differentiated by offering a hand up.

3. 86¢ of every dollar we earn is used to fund our vocational programs and services.

When you shop in our stores or donate goods, 86¢ of each dollar earned supports our job-training and employment programs. This is a very healthy number in the nonprofit world and a solid indicator of our commitment to good stewardship of your donations. Our Goodwill offers more than 20 social programs and services in Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania. The donated goods sold in our stores help support those vital programs.

4. Our Goodwill is an independent agency that operates autonomously from all other Goodwills.

Goodwill Industries of Ashtabula, Inc. (Serving Northeast Ohio & Northwest Pennsylvania) is one of 163 independent members of Goodwill Industries International, including international agencies. Each agency is independently operated and funded. Member agencies must adhere to professional, financial, legal, and branding guidelines set forth by Goodwill Industries International. While we have similar missions, each Goodwill is unique in the programs it offers and how it operates its business, because each of the communities we serve is unique. Additionally, each of the 163 Goodwill independent organizations has their own Board of Directors/Trustees, a completely different CEO (Meaning there are 164 Goodwill CEO's including the CEO of Goodwill Industries International), a completely different executive staff, employees, etc. Every single one of those just named also possesses completely different salary/wages, mostly dependent on the size of the Goodwill organization they are a part of.
